Experience the Best of Indie Film at
the El Paso Film Festival: September 26-28, 2024

The El Paso Film Festival, recognized by MovieMaker Magazine as one of the top 50 festivals worth the entry fee, is set to return to downtown El Paso from September 26-28. The festival has once again partnered with El Paso Film & Creative Industries Commission to offer a vibrant mix of films, panels, and special events that celebrate the art of filmmaking, making it one of the fastest-rising and friendliest film festivals in the country.

MovieMaker Magazine praised the festival's fascinating location near the U.S.-Mexican border, fun and adventurous programming, and great parties. The magazine noted the festival’s unique ability to make everyone feel welcome, frequently surprising filmmakers with awards at the end of their screenings.

This year’s festival will feature a series of short and feature films in the Philanthropy Theater and El Paso Museum of Art. In addition to the film screenings, the festival will feature insightful workshops and panels hosted by Creative El Paso. These workshops and panels will be held at the beautiful and historic backstage of the Plaza Theater.

Events hosted by CreativElPaso are free to the public and provide a unique opportunity to hear from seasoned professionals in the film industry. From exploring the latest trends in filmmaking to discussing the challenges and opportunities for independent filmmakers, these panels are a must-attend for anyone interested in the art and business of film.

Drew Mayer-Oakes, El Paso Film Commissioner, shared his excitement about the panels, saying “the El Paso Film Festival is really the perfect opportunity for us to offer the Creating Ways creative industry panel and discussion content alongside the annual Fest's awesome lineup of films,” said Mayer-Oakes.  “This is our third year collaborating with the festival, and we are offering more free panels than ever to all who are interested in any level of filmmaking.

One of the film industry panels that will be offered by CreativeElPaso to attendees includes how to produce and direct a low budget short film, which will be moderated by ON FILM’s Charles Horak and will feature Actor Ellar Coltrane and local El Paso filmmaker Carlos M. De La Torre. A case study of De La Torre’s film So, Who Was It This Time? will be part of the presentation.

“This has become a monumental film as it has given us all an opportunity to create a quality short film that is set and made in El Paso,” said De La Torre. “Our team consisted of several local crew members who love storytelling in the borderland and are dedicated to their craft. And now, we begin the journey of sharing this film with the world, starting at our hometown festival.”

Another local El Paso filmmaker, Chris Hanna, will also be premiering his latest feature film at the El Paso Film Festival. Fans of the cult classic The Room won’t want to miss On the Edge of Freedom, featuring Greg Sestero and former District 1 representative and mayoral candidate Brian Kennedy. After the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session.

"I am honored to have worked with so much incredible talent in both acting and crew, to make this Texas-based narrative film,” said Hanna. Most of the people who worked on this project are from El Paso, and it brings me joy to show how much talent we truly have in our community.”

Among its many screenings, the festival also offers free programming of documentary films thanks to a partnership made possible with the El Paso Museum of Art (EPMA). EPMA is providing a chance to engage with thought-provoking content in a museum setting for attendees, free of charge.

Edward Hayes Jr., El Paso Museum of Art Executive Director, shared his excitement about partnering once more with the El Paso Film Festival. “EPMA is thrilled to provide free film screenings that align with our Frontera Forward initiative," said Hayes. “Launched in 2023, Frontera Forward exhibitions and programs boldly lean into authentic cultural expressions of the borderland and aim to advance the understanding and appreciation of our surrounding border communities through the arts.”
